       Elevance Health, Inc. (formerly Anthem, Inc.) is a health company headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States. It is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.

       Through its family of companies, Elevance Health provides health benefit solutions through a broad portfolio of integrated health care plans and related services, along with a wide range of specialty products such as life and disability insurance benefits, dental, vision, behavioral health benefit services, as well as long-term care insurance and flexible spending accounts.

    HISTORY


       Elevance Health was formed as WellPoint, Inc. in 2004 when WellPoint Health Networks Inc. merged with Anthem, Inc.

       At the time of the merger, the parent company originally assumed the WellPoint, Inc. name. However, WellPoint, Inc. changed its name to Anthem, Inc. in 2014 because the Anthem brand is the name consumers are most familiar with.

    WellPoint Health Network Inc.

       WellPoint Health Network Inc.’s predecessor was Blue Cross of California. Blue Cross of California was founded in 1982 with the consolidation of Blue Cross of Northern California (established in 1936) and Blue Cross of Southern California (established in 1937).

       In 1992, Blue Cross of California formed WellPoint Health Networks to operate its managed care business.

       In 1993, Blue Cross of California spun off its managed care business into a separate publicly traded entity, WellPoint Health Networks Inc.

       In 1996, Blue Cross of California converted all its business to for-profit status, resulting in a restructuring that made WellPoint Health Networks Inc. the parent organization.

       In 2002, WellPoint Health Networks acquired HealthLink and MethodistCare, an HMO in Texas.

       In 2003, WellPoint Health Networks acquired Golden West Dental and Vision, a provider of dental and vision plans in California.

    Anthem, Inc.

       Anthem, Inc.’s predecessors were Blue Cross of Indiana and Blue Shield of Indiana. Those two companies were formed in 1944 and 1946 as mutual insurance companies, providing health insurance to residents of Indiana.

       Blue Cross of Indiana and Blue Shield of Indiana eventually merged to form Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Indiana.

       In 2001, Anthem demutualized and became a public company via an initial public offering.


       In 2004, Anthem, Inc. and WellPoint Health Networks, Inc. merged to become WellPoint, Inc.

       In 2007, WellPoint, Inc. acquired Imaging Management Holdings, the holding company of American Imaging Management, a radiology benefits management and technology company.

       In 2008, WellPoint, Inc. acquired Resolution Health, Inc., a data analytics-driven personal health care guidance company.

       In 2009, WellPoint, Inc. acquired DeCare Dental, one of the country’s largest administrators of dental plans.

       In 2012, WellPoint acquired Amerigroup Corporation, one of the country’s largest managed care companies.

       In 2014, WellPoint, Inc. changed its corporate name to Anthem, Inc.

       In 2015,  Anthem Inc. acquired Simply Healthcare Holdings, a managed care company for people enrolled in Medicaid and Medicare programs.

       In 2017, Anthem Inc. acquired Health Sun, an integrated Medicare Advantage health plan and health care delivery network.

       In 2022, the company’s name was changed from Anthem, Inc. to Elevance Health, Inc.
