Dell Technologies, Inc. is an American multinational technology company headquartered in Round Rock, Texas, United States.
The company was formed as a result of the September 2016 merger of Dell and EMC Corporation (which later became Dell EMC). The merger combined Dell‘s enterprise server, personal computer, and mobile businesses with EMC’s enterprise storage business in a significant Vertical merger of IT giants.
At that time, EMC Corp. owned around 80% of the stock of VMware, but after the merger, VMware was maintained as a separate company, held via a new tracking stock, while the rest of EMC were rolled into Dell.
After the merger, Dell was re-organized with a new parent company, Dell Technologies; Dell’s consumer and workstation businesses are internally referred to as the Dell Client Solutions Group (CSG), being one of the company’s three main business divisions alongside Dell EMC and VMware.
On April 15, 2021, Dell is reported to spin out the remaining of its VMware stakes to shareholders.
The company operates under the following divisions: Dell Client Solutions Group and Dell EMC Infrastructure Solutions Group.
Dell Client Solutions Group (CSG)
Dell Client Solutions Group produces laptops, PCs, monitors, and other accessories.
Dell EMC Infrastructure Solutions Group (ISG)
Dell EMC Infrastructure Solutions Group provides IT infrastructure including servers, storage, data protection, converged and hyper-converged solutions from Dell EMC.
The company also owns other businesses such as:
- Secureworks – a cybersecurity company
- Virtustream – a provider of cloud computing management software, infrastructure as a service (“IaaS”) and managed services.
- Dell Boomi – a business unit that specializes in integration platform as a service (iPaaS), API management, Master Data Management, and data preparation.
Dell divested its ownership in VMware, a cloud computing and virtualization technology company, and Pivotal Software, a multinational software and services company that provided cloud platform hosting and consulting services.
With more than 158,000 employees, Dell Technologies, Inc. is considered one of the top 2000 largest public companies in the world, according to Forbes.
