Today, moving biological material is a specialized industry with its own regulations, packaging science and service models.

Its growth tracks the rise of biotechnology itself. Each new kind of medicine has forced logistics companies to adapt, and the ones that didn’t fell behind.

The courier era

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, overnight express delivery was still a new business model. FedEx began flying packages in 1973, and guaranteed next-morning delivery changed how companies thought about speed.

At the same time, a young biotech industry was forming: Genentech was founded in 1976, and the first recombinant drug, human insulin, won FDA approval in 1982.

Labs and hospitals shipped samples with whatever was available, from local couriers to airline counter-to-counter service and the new express carriers.

Few of these providers knew much about what they were carrying. Samples went out in foam coolers with ice packs or dry ice, and success often depended on a driver who happened to care.

This is the world Mercury entered in 1984, when life science shipping was still a sideline within general courier work.

Rules catch up with the science

As research volumes grew, regulators began treating biological shipments as their own risk category. Dry ice counts as a dangerous good in air transport because it releases carbon dioxide gas, so it needs specific labels and quantity limits.

Diagnostic specimens gained their own classification too, typically moving as “Biological Substance, Category B” under UN3373 with strict triple-packaging rules.

Pharmaceutical distribution tightened at the same time. Good Distribution Practice standards, including the EU’s revised GDP guidelines in 2013, pushed shippers to document temperature control across the entire route.

Compliance became part of the product. Generalist carriers could still move the boxes, but shippers increasingly needed partners who understood the rules behind them.

Biologics raise the stakes

The real turning point was the shift from small-molecule pills to biologics. Antibodies, vaccines and therapeutic proteins are fragile and often need tight temperature ranges from lab to patient.

Cell and gene therapies pushed this further. The first CAR-T therapies, approved in the US in 2017, depend on a patient’s own cells traveling to a manufacturing site and back, often at cryogenic temperatures in liquid nitrogen dry shippers.

Clinical trials also went global. A single study might send samples from dozens of countries to one central lab, and each sample represents a patient visit that cannot be repeated.

Then COVID-19 vaccines arrived, some needing ultra-cold storage around minus 70°C, and cold chain logistics made front-page news for the first time.

From moving boxes to managing risk

These pressures changed what customers actually buy. Speed still matters, but visibility and intervention matter more.

Modern life science logistics relies on real-time tracking, temperature data loggers and teams who act the moment a flight is delayed or dry ice runs low.

Customs expertise has become essential too. A shipment held at a border for an extra day can lose its entire value.

Service models have multiplied to match. Options now range from discounted parcel lanes for stable goods to next-flight-out service, onboard couriers who hand-carry critical items, and same day freight delivery for specimens and equipment that cannot wait for an overnight network.

Why specialists have held their ground?

Large integrated carriers dominate global parcel volume, yet specialist providers have carved out a lasting role. Their advantage is attention rather than scale.

Mercury is one example of that path. Founded in 1984, it now focuses entirely on healthcare and life sciences, offering cold chain, courier, freight and customs brokerage services. The company reports serving more than 1,500 customers since 2020 and a 99.6% success rate on cold chain shipments.

The industry’s history suggests its next chapter will be shaped the same way as the last ones: by the medicines being developed.

As personalized therapies and decentralized trials grow, more shipments will be small, urgent and irreplaceable. That favors logistics companies built around precision rather than volume.

Forty years ago, a vial of blood and a box of office files often rode in the same courier van.
