   Intesa Sanpaolo S.p.A. is an Italian banking group headquartered in Turin, Italy.

HISTORY

   Intesa Sanpaolo was formed on January 1, 2007, through the merger of two Italian banking groups, Banca Intesa and Sanpaolo IMI.

   In 2021, UBI Banca was incorporated into Intesa Sanpaolo.

Banca Intesa

   Banca Intesa was created by a merger between Cariplo and Banco Ambrosiano Veneto, in 1998. Banca Commerciale Italiana also joined the group in the following year.

Cariplo Sp.A.

   Cariplo Sp.A. is the oldest part of the banking group. It can trace its roots to the Austrian Empire household savings bank Cassa di Risparmio delle Provincie Lombarde, established in 1823.

Sanpaolo IMI

   Sanpaolo IMI was created by a merger between Istituto Bancario San Paolo di Torino and IMI (Istituto Mobiliare Italiano), in 1998.

UBI Banca

   UBI Banca was formed in 2007 from the merger of the BPU Banca Group and the Banca Lombarda e Piemontese Group.

DIVISIONS


   The group’s structure is made up of the following divisions:

  • The Banca dei Territori division (domestic commercial banking) – responsible for retail and SME customers;
  • The Corporate and Investment Banking division – responsible for Corporates, Financial Institutions and Public Administration;
  • The International Subsidiary Banks division;
  • The Private Banking division;
  • The Asset Management division;
  • The Insurance division.

   With more than 92 000 employees in more than 25 countries, Intesa Sanpaolo S.p.A. is considered one of the largest banking groups in Italy. According to Forbes, it is considered one of the Top 2000 Largest Public Companies in the World.
