abrdn plc (formerly Standard Life Aberdeen plc) is a global investment company headquartered in Edinburgh, Scotland, the United Kingdom.
HISTORY
abrdn was formed in 2017 as Standard Life Aberdeen plc through the merger of Aberdeen Asset Management Plc and Standard Life Plc, one of the world’s largest investment companies. It was listed on the London Stock Exchange.
In 2018, Standard Life Aberdeen announced its intention to sell the Standard Life insurance business to Phoenix.
In 2021, after having sold the Standard Life Insurance business to Phoenix in 2018, Standard Life Aberdeen plc changed its name to abrdn plc (pronounced “Aberdeen”).
In 2022, the company acquired Interactive Investor, a retail investment services company.
Aberdeen Asset Management Plc
Aberdeen Asset Management began in 1983 when a group of investors, including Martin Gilbert, bought out a £50 million investment trust in Aberdeen. Aberdeen Trust PLC changed its name to Aberdeen Asset Management in 1997.
Standard Life Plc
Standard Life, a life assurance, pensions and long-terms savings company, was established in 1825 as the Standard Life Assurance Company and was reincorporated as a mutual assurance company in 1925.
In 2010, Standard Life sold Standard Life Bank plc to Barclays plc.
In 2018, Standard Life was acquired by Phoenix Group Holdings plc from Standard Life Aberdeen plc.
