Live esports drew 3.3 billion hours of watch time in 2025, a 1.5% rise on 2024 and the third straight year of growth, according to Esports Charts. Tournaments paid out $272.6 million over the same year. This post covers what the esports market is worth in 2026, who watches, which games pay, and where the published numbers disagree.

How Big Is The Esports Market In 2026?
Three research firms publishing in 2026 put the global esports market between $3.30 billion and $9.94 billion. The gap is definitional, not arithmetic: each firm counts a different set of revenue lines.
Grand View Research tracks direct esports revenue and lands lowest. Precedence Research counts a wider consumer ecosystem and lands roughly three times higher.
| Research firm | 2025 revenue | 2026 revenue | Forecast | Stated growth rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Precedence Research | 8.11billion | 9.94 billion | $55.41 billion by 2035 | 21.19% CAGR, 2026–2035 |
| Mordor Intelligence | 5.08billion | 5.34 billion | $6.78 billion by 2031 | 4.89% CAGR, 2026–2031 |
| Grand View Research | 2.60billion | 3.30 billion | $12.00 billion by 2033 | 20.4% CAGR, 2026–2033 |
Source: Precedence Research, Mordor Intelligence and Grand View Research, 2026 report editions covering vendor revenue for 2025 and 2026. Each firm applies its own scope definition.
The growth columns carry the same warning. Mordor Intelligence models 4.89% a year on a mid-sized base while Grand View Research models 20.4% on a narrow one, so the percentages are not comparable.
Sponsorship remains the single largest revenue line. Grand View Research puts the sponsorship segment above 40% of global esports revenue in 2025, with North America holding a 30.0% regional revenue share.
Esports Market Viewership: Hours Watched In 2025
Total live esports consumption reached 3.3 billion hours in 2025, excluding mainland China. That is the third consecutive annual increase, and Esports Charts records it as above the levels set during the pandemic years.
Counter-Strike drove the gain, adding 33% more hours watched than in 2024. Esports Charts attributes the rise to a more saturated tournament calendar funded by gambling and betting sponsors.
Mobile esports accounted for more than 25% of total viewing hours in 2025. Tournament organizers listed by Esports Charts include ESL, Red Bull and Epic Games.

Esports World Cup 2026 Sets A $75 Million Prize Pool
The Esports World Cup Foundation announced a $75 million total prize pool on 20 January 2026, the largest the event has carried. The 2026 edition runs in Riyadh from 6 July to 23 August across 25 tournaments in 24 games.
More than 2,000 players from roughly 200 clubs and over 100 countries are entered. The lineup adds Fortnite and Trackmania, alongside Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 from Microsoft’s games division.

Esports Market Audience Size And Reach
The Esports World Cup Foundation reports that its 2025 event reached 750 million viewers worldwide and generated 350 million hours watched. Peak concurrent viewership hit 7.98 million during the League of Legends final.
Coverage ran through 97 broadcast partners on 28 platforms and more than 800 channels in 35 languages. The event and its festival drew more than 3 million on-site visitors across seven weeks in Riyadh.

Global audience counts are harder to pin down. The most-quoted figures come from a Newzoo forecast published through Statista in April 2022, which projected 318.1 million esports enthusiasts and 322.7 million occasional viewers for 2025.
Those are 2022 projections, not measured 2025 counts, and Statista has not updated that dataset since. Rising celebrity involvement in gaming and co-streaming both widen reach in ways viewer-type forecasts do not capture.
