Allergan Plc history, profile and corporate video

Allergan Plc is an American pharmaceutical company headquartered in Dublin, Ireland. It was formed in March 2015 through the merger of Irish-based Actavis Plc and U.S.-based Allergan, Inc.

    Allergan, Inc.

The predecessor of the current company traces its roots back to 1948 when the pharmacist Gavin S. Herbert founded Allergan Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

In 1991, Allergan acquired the company Oculinum, which manufactured products for eye muscle disorders. Following the acquisition, the product was renamed Botox.

    Actavis Plc

The other predecessor of the current company traces its roots back to 1983 when colleagues Allen Chao and David Hsia formed Watson Pharmaceuticals, a drug development enterprise.

On October 31, 2012, Watson acquired Actavis for €4.25 billion and took the Actavis name.

In 2015, Actavis Plc acquired Allergan, Inc., and in effect redomiciled Allergan to Ireland in a corporate tax inversion. Following the acquisition, the company took the Allergan name.

On May 8, 2020, the U.S. pharmaceutical company AbbVie acquired Allergan for $63 billion, and return Allergan to the U.S. for tax purposes.

The company markets brand-name drugs and medical devices primarily focused on four key therapeutic areas including medical aesthetics, eye care, central nervous system, and gastroenterology.

With more than 17 000 employees, Allergan Plc is considered one of the top 2000 largest public companies in the world, according to Forbes.
