       Gilead Sciences, Inc. is an American biopharmaceutical company headquartered in Foster City, California, U.S. It was originally founded under the name Oligogen by the medical doctor Michael L. Riordan, in June 1987, and the primary therapeutic focus of the company was in antiviral medicines, a field of interest for Riordan after he contracted dengue fever.

       Oligogen changed its name to Gilead Sciences, after the reputed healing properties of the ancient Balm of Gilead.


       The company researches, develops and commercializes medicines for several different areas of focus, such as HIV/AIDS, Liver Diseases, Hematology/Oncology, Cardiovascular, Inflammation/Respiratory, and Other Medicines.
