       The Merck Group (EMD Group in USA and Canada) is a German multinational pharmaceutical, chemical and life sciences company headquartered in Darmstadt, Germany. It was founded by Friedrich Jacob Merck, who receives a privilege for a pharmacy in Darmstadt in 1668.

       Since 1995, the current main parent company of the group is named Merck KGaA, and is itself mainly owned by the former main parent company, E. Merck oHG, which now operates as a holding company.


       The group operates through the following main core business segments: Healthcare, Life Science and Performance Materials.

    Healthcare

       The Healthcare segment designs and develops medicines and intelligent devices in therapeutic areas such as endocrinology, general medicine, fertility, neurology & immunology, and oncology.

    Life Science

       The Life Science segment provides tools, high-grade chemicals, and equipment for academic labs, biotech, and biopharmaceutical manufacturers, as well as the industrial sector.

    Performance Materials

       The Performance Materials segment develops specialty chemicals for demanding applications, from liquid crystals and OLED materials for displays and lighting to effect pigments for coatings and cosmetics through to high-tech materials for the electronics industry.

       In the USA and Canada, the group operates as EMD Serono in the Biopharma business, as MilliporeSigma in the Life Science business, and as EMD Performance Materials in the materials business.


       With more than 57 000 employees in more than 180 countries, The Merck Group is considered the world’s oldest operating chemical and pharmaceutical company, as well as one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. According to Forbes, it is considered one of the top 2000 largest public companies in the world.
