Otis Worldwide Corp., also known by its former legal name Otis Elevator Company, is an American company engaged in manufacturing, installing, and servicing elevators, escalators and moving walks. It is headquartered in Farmington, Connecticut, United States.
The company was founded in 1853 after Elisha Otis invented the elevator safety brake, a mechanism that automatically locks the elevator if the hoisting rope breaks.
In 1976, the Otis Elevator Company was acquired by United Technologies.
In 1997, Otis Elevator Company acquired Evans Lifts, which was the oldest and largest manufacturer of lift equipment in the UK.
In 2011, Otis acquired Marshall Elevator.
In 2020, United Technologies spun off Otis Elevator into an independent company as Otis Worldwide Corporation.
With over 69,000 employees and more than 200 countries and territories served, Otis Worldwide Corp is considered one of the world’s largest elevator and escalator manufacturing, installation and service companies. According to Forbes, it is considered one of the Top 2000 Largest Public Companies in the World.
