Petrรณleo Brasileiro SA, known as Petrobras, is a Brazilian multinational corporation in the petroleum industry headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was founded on October 3, 1953, as a result of a popular campaign, “O petrรณleo รฉ nosso” (“The Oil is Ours”), under the government of Brazilian President Getรบlio Vargas.
The company’s name translates to Brazilian Petroleum Corporation (Petrobras).

The company operates through the following segments: Oil and Gas Exploration and Production, Refining, Supply of Natural Gas, Distribution, Petrochemicals & Fertilizers, Electric Energy Generation, Biofuel Production, and Transportation & Trade.
Oil and Gas Exploration and Production
The Oil and Gas Exploration and Production segment involves exploration, development and production in deep pre-salt waters of crude oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquids (NGL).
Refining
The Refining segment focuses on the production of oil products, such as diesel gasoline, naphtha, jet fuel, liquefied petroleum gas, lubricants, and other substances used as feedstock for many other products.
Supply of Natural Gas
The Supply of Natural Gas segment delivers feedstock for industries and refineries and supplies gas to thermoelectric plants, industries, homes, and offices.
Distribution
The Distribution segment focuses on the distribution of oil products and biofuels and the reselling of fuels and lubricants through service stations nationwide.
Petrochemicals & Fertilizers
The Petrochemicals & Fertilizers segment provides oil products such as paraffin and naphtha, and converts natural gas to urea, ammonia, among others, to be used as feedstock in various industries. This segment also provides fertilizers such as Nitrogenated Fertilizer Plant (Fafen) and Nitrogenated Fertilizer Plant (Fafen-SE).
Electric Energy Generation
The Electric Energy Generation segment operates and holds stakes in thermal, wind, and small hydropower plants. It also provides services such as power efficiency, co-generation, generation with biomass, and others.
Biofuel Production
The Biofuel Production segment covers ethanol, aviation biofuel, diesel, gasoline from agricultural waste, biodiesel, bio-lubricants, and microalgae for biofuel, biogas, and bio-oil production.
Transportation & Trade
The Transportation & Trade segment focuses on the transport and storage of oil products, biofuels and natural gas. It also involves the trading of diesel fuel, gasoline, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), naphtha, fuel oil, and jet fuel.
