    HISTORY


       Shin-Etsu Chemical Co., Ltd. was founded as Shin-Etsu Nitrogen Fertilizer Co., Ltd. in 1926 to manufacture chemical fertilizer and limestone nitrogen. The company’s “Shin” comes from Shinano and “Etsu” is taken from Echigo.

       Nagano Prefecture’s (Shinano-area) plentiful water give birth to electric power and the limestone that came from Niigata Prefecture (Echigo-area) was a key raw material, which was called, “Oyashirazu’s great earth.”

       In 1927, the Naoetsu Plant began production of carbide and lime nitrogen fertilizer.

       In 1940, Shin-Etsu Nitrogen Fertilizer Co., Ltd. changed its name to Shin-Etsu Chemical Co., Ltd.

       In 1949, the company was listed on Tokyo Stock Exchange.

       In 1953, the Silicone Production Facilities were established.

       In 1955, Nissin Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. was established.

       In 1956, PVC production began.

       In 1957, caustic soda and chlorine production began.

       In 1959, chloromethane production began.

       In 1960, Shin-Etsu Polymer Co., Ltd. and C.I.R.E.S. (Portugal) were established.

       In 1962, Shin-Etsu Astech Co., Ltd. was established and cellulose derivatives production began.

       In 1964, Nagano Electronics Industrial Co., Ltd. was established.

       In 1967, Shin-Etsu Metallurgical Co., Ltd. was established and high-purity Yttrium and other Rare Earth production began.

       In 1968, Kashima Vinyl Chloride Monomer Co., Ltd., Kashima Chlorine & Alkali Co., Ltd and Shin-Etsu Vinyl Acetate Co., Ltd. were established.

       In 1969, Naoetsu Electronics Co., Ltd. was established.

       In 1972, Shin-Etsu Quartz Products Co., Ltd. was established and rare-earth magnets were developed.

       In 1973, Shintech, Inc. (U.S.A.) and S.E.H. Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. were established.

       In 1976, Shin-Etsu Engineering Co., Ltd., PVC & Polymer Materials Research Center and Silicone-Electronics Materials Research Center were established.

       In 1977, the Specialty Chemicals Research Center and the Magnetic Materials Research Center were established.

       In 1979, Shin-Etsu Handotai America, Inc. (S.E.H. America) was established.

       In 1984, Shin-Etsu Handotai Europe, Ltd. (S.E.H. Europe) was established.

       In 1985, K-Bin, Inc. (U.S.A.) and Shin-Etsu Silicones of America, Inc. were established.

       In 1986, Shin-Etsu Silicone Korea Co., Ltd was established.

       In 1987, Shin-Etsu Silicone Taiwan Co., Ltd was established.

       In 1988, Shin-Etsu (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. was established.

       In 1989, MicroSi, Inc. (U.S.A.) and Shin-Etsu Silicones Europe B.V. (The Netherlands) were established.

       In 1990, Shin-Etsu International Europe B.V. (The Netherlands) and Shin-Etsu Singapore Pte. Ltd. were established.

       In 1993, Shin-Etsu Magnetics, Inc. (U.S.A.) and S.E.H. (Shah Alam) Sdn. Bhd. (Malaysia) were established.

       In 1995, Shin-Etsu Opto Electronic Co., Ltd. (Taiwan), Shin-Etsu Electronics (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd., Shin-Etsu Singapore Pte. Ltd., and Shin-Etsu Handotai Taiwan Co., Ltd. were established.

       In 1996, Shin-Etsu Chemical acquired Simcoa Operations Pty. Ltd. (Australia).

       In 1999, a Dutch PVC business was purchased and Shin-Etsu PVC B.V. was established.

       In 2001, Asia Silicones Monomer Ltd. (Thailand) and Shin-Etsu Silicones (Thailand) Ltd. were established.

       In 2002, Zhejiang Shin-Etsu High-Tech Chemical Co., Ltd. was established.

       In 2003, a Germany Cellulose business was purchased. That year, Shin-Etsu Silicone International Trading (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. and SE Tylose GmbH & Co., KG were also established.

       In 2005, JAPAN VAM & POVAL Co. Ltd. (established in 2002) became a wholly owned Shin-Etsu Group Company.

       In 2006, the takeover of Mimasu Semiconductor Industry Co., Ltd was completed.

       In 2011, Shin-Etsu Magnetic Materials Vietnam Co., Ltd. and Shin-Etsu Electronics Materials Vietnam Co., Ltd. were established.

       In 2012, Shin-Etsu (Changting) Technology Co., Ltd. was established.

       In 2013, Asia Silicones Monomer Ltd. became a wholly owned Shin-Etsu Group Company.

       In 2015, Shin-Etsu YOFC(Hubei) Optical Preform Co., Ltd. was established.


       With more than 24,000 employees and operations in over 20 countries, Shin-Etsu Chemical Co., Ltd. is considered one of Japan’s largest chemical companies. According to Forbes, it is considered one of the Largest Public Companies in the World.
