    “Smithfield Foods History

    SMALL TOWN BEGINNING, GLOBAL REACH

In 1936, the Luter family began a small packing plant in Smithfield, Virginia, that would one day grow to become Smithfield Foods, even allowing the town of Smithfield to come to be known as the Ham Capital of the World. Our founders knew that future success lay in providing high quality, affordable products. Step by step, Smithfield Foods expanded and developed. During the 1980s, the company began differentiating itself by managing its supply of hogs from conception to processing. By the end of 1998, Smithfield Foods was the number one pork producer in the United States and growing internationally.

With expansion came change and the need to address global needs around the world.

In 2006, Larry Pope succeeded Joseph W. Luter, III as chief executive officer of Smithfield Foods. Under his leadership, Smithfield developed an industry-leading sustainability program focused on the environment, animal care, employees, food safety, communities and value creation.

On September 26, 2013, Smithfield Foods announced the completion of a definitive merger agreement with Shuanghui International Holdings Limited, which is now named WH Group Limited. We remain focused on producing food that we are proud to serve to our friends and family. We look forward to continuing to feed millions of people each year with pork that is both delicious and affordable.”
