Snam S.p.A. is an energy infrastructure company, headquartered in San Donato Milanese (Metanopoli), Milan, Italy. It operates through the following business segments: Natural Gas Transportation, Gas Storage, and Regasification of liquefied natural gas (LNG).
The company also invests in new energy transition businesses, including sustainable mobility (compressed – CNG and bio-CNG – and liquefied – LNG and bio-LNG – natural gas distributors, Small Scale LNG), infrastructure for biomethane from organic waste and agricultural and agro-industrial waste, and energy efficiency services tailored to apartment buildings, the public administration and industry, hydrogen.
SNAM HISTORY
The story of Snam began in 1941 when the Ente Nazionale Metano (formed in 1940), along with AGIP, Regie Terme di Salsomaggiore and the Società Anonima Utilizzazione e Ricerca Gas Idrocarburati (Surgi) founded Società Nazionale Metanodotti (Snam) for the construction and operation of pipelines and the distribution and sale of gas.
In June 2001, Rete Gas Italia was founded, which took over Snam’s technological assets and its wealth of expertise in the transport of natural gas.
In October 2001, Rete Gas Italia was renamed Snam Rete Gas.
In December 2001, Snam was listed on the Italian stock exchange managed by Borsa Italiana.
In 2009, Snam Rete Gas acquired Stogit and Italgas from Eni.
In January 2012, the company changed its name from Snam Rete Gas to Snam.
In September 2012, Snam and Fluxys have closed the transaction to acquire E.ON’s stake in Interconnector UK, owner and operator of the subsea gas pipeline between the UK and Belgium.
In 2013, Snam completed the acquisition from Total of TIGF (from 2018 Teréga), a company active in the transport and storage of natural gas in the South West of France.
In 2014, Snam acquires from CDP Gas S.r.l. 84.47% of Trans Austria Gasleitung GmbH (TAG), the company that owns the Austrian section of the gas pipeline linking Russia and Italy.
In 2015, Snam has completed the acquisition of the 20% interest held by Statoil Holding Netherlands B.V. in the Trans Adriatic Pipeline AG (TAP). TAP was established with the purpose of developing the Trans Adriatic Pipeline project, spanning from the Turkey-Greece border to Italy along the South Corridor.
In November 2016, Snam and Italgas confirmed the separation of Italgas from Snam
In 2016, OMV, the Austrian oil and gas company, completed the sale of a 49% minority stake in Gas Connect Austria GmbH (GCA) to the Consortium composed of Allianz, one of Europe’s largest insurers, and Snam.
In 2017, Infrastrutture Trasporto Gas S.p.A. (ITG) and 7,3% of adriatic GNL were acquired.
2018 Events:
- Fluxys and Snam acquired the 33.5% stake owned by Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ) in Interconnector UK, the bi-directional pipeline linking the United Kingdom into Belgium and the Continent.
- Snam, together with Enagás and Fluxys, acquired 66% stake in DESFA, the national operator in the natural gas infrastructure sector.
- Snam, through its subsidiary Snam 4 Mobility, acquired the business arm operating in the design, development and production of technological solutions for natural gas fuelling stations for the automotive sector of M.T.M., a Westport Fuel Systems Inc. company.
- Snam acquired 82% controlling stake in TEP Energy Solution (TEP).
- Snam acquired 70% of IES Biogas through its subsidiary Snam 4 Mobility.
- Snam acquired Enersi Sicilia Srl, through its subsidiary Snam4Mobility.
In 2019, Snam, Italian Biogas Consortium, Confagricoltura, Eni, FPT Industrial, IVECO, and New Holland Agriculture signed a cooperation agreement to support the implementation of the biomethane decree.
In 2020, Mieci SpA and Evolve Srl were acquired through wholly-owned subsidiary Snam 4 Efficiency.
In 2021, Snam acquired a 49.9% stake in Eni’s subsidiaries operating TTPC and TMPC gas pipelines connecting Algeria to Italy.
In December 2021, Snam acquired from Thai energy company PTTER a 25% stake in the East Mediterranean Gas Company (EMG), owner of the Arish-Ashkelon gas pipeline (part of the so-called “Peace Gas Pipeline”) connecting the Israeli terminal of Ashkelon to the Egyptian receiving station of Al-Arish.
