TotalEnergies SE (formerly Total SA) is a French multinational integrated oil and gas company headquartered in Courbevoie, France.
HISTORY
TotalEnergies was founded on March 28, 1924, as the Compagnie française des pétroles (CFP), literally the “French Petroleum Company”, by Col. Ernest Mercier with the support of ninety banks and companies after World War I.
The company renamed itself Total CFP in 1985 to increase the notoriety of its gasoline brand. Later in 1991, the name was changed to Total SA, when it became a public company listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
After Total’s takeover of Petrofina of Belgium in 1999, it became known as Total Fina.
In 2000, it also acquired Elf Aquitaine, and the company became known as TotalFinaElf.
On May 6, 2003, the company was renamed back to Total SA.
In 2021, the company renamed itself TotalEnergies SE to illustrate its investments in the production of green electricity.
OPERATIONS
TotalEnergies SE operates through three segments: Exploration & Production Operations, Refining & Petrochemicals Operations, and Ship & Market.
Exploration & Production Operations
The Exploration & Production Operations segment focuses on the exploration and production of oil & gas, renewable energies (solar and wind energy) and bioenergies (renewable, low-carbon resources).
Refining & Petrochemicals Operations
The Refining & Petrochemicals Operations segment includes refining & petrochemicals, electricity, and specialty chemicals.
Ship & Market
The Ship & Market segment includes operations of trading & shipping, providing services and products, such as fuels, lubricants, bitumen, natural gas, special fluids, and fuel additives or power and solar photovoltaic solutions.
With more than 100,000 employees in more than 130 countries, TotalEnergies SE is considered one of the largest publicly traded oil and gas companies in the world. According to Forbes, it is considered one of the Largest Public Companies in the World.
