AvalonBay Communities, Inc. is a real estate investment trust that is engaged in the development, redevelopment, acquisition, ownership and operation of multifamily communities in high barrier to entry markets of the U.S. It operates through three segments: Established Communities segment, Other Stabilized Communities segment and Development/Redevelopment Communities segment. The Established Communities segment is generally operating communities that are owned and had stabilized occupancy. The Other Stabilized Communities segment includes all other completed communities that have stabilized occupancy. The Development/Redevelopment Communities segment consists of communities that are under construction and have not received a final certificate of occupancy.
