       The Bank of Montreal (BMO), or also known as BMO Financial Group in the U.S., is a Canadian financial services company with the head office in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, but with its operational headquarters and executive offices located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

       It was founded on 23 June 1817, when a group of eight merchants signed the Articles of Association to establish the Montreal Bank. The signors of the document were: Robert Armour, John C. Bush, Austin Cuvillier, George Garden, Horatio Gates, James Leslie, George Moffatt, John Richardson, and Thomas A. Turner.


       The company operates through the following business segments: Personal, Wealth, Business, Commercial, and Capital Markets.

    Personal

       The Personal segment involves bank accounts, credit cards, mortgages, loans & lines of credit, investments, financial planning, and insurance.

    Wealth

       The Wealth segment involves services such as banking & borrowing, investment management, online investing, trust & estate services, tax planning, philanthropy, institutional asset management, and cross-border banking.

    Business

       The Business segment covers services such as plans & accounts, credit cards, loans & commercial mortgages, payments & payroll, treasury &payments, or deposits & liquidity.

    Commercial

       The Commercial segment includes products and services such as asset-based lending, business strategy, doing business internationally, doing business in the U.S., economic insights, equipment leasing & finance, finance growth, loan syndication & agency services, cash flow management, deposits, risk management, mergers & acquisitions, subordinated debt/equity, and wealth management.

    Capital Markets

       The Capital Markets segment involves solutions such as advisory, capital raising, global banks & global trade, institutional investing, investment products, market risk management, research & strategy, sustainable finance, and treasury services.

    • BMO Harris Bank (commercial and retail banking in the U.S.).

    • BMO Capital Markets (investment and corporate banking).

    Private Banking (wealth management)

    • BMO Nesbitt Burns (full service investing in Canada);
    • BMO InvestorLine (self-service investing in Canada);
    • BMO Harris Investor (advisory services in the United States);
    • BMO Private Banking (private banking in Canada and the United States).

       With more than 45 000 employees, The Bank of Montreal is considered one of the largest banks in Canada, by market capitalization and assets, as well as one of the largest banks in North America, by assets. According to Forbes, it is considered one of the top 2000 largest public companies in the world.
