       Capital One Financial Corporation (COF) is an American holding company headquartered in McLean, Virginia, United States. It was founded on July 27, 1994, when Signet Financial Corp announced the corporate spin-off of its credit card division, OakStone Financial, with Richard Fairbank as CEO. Later, the subsidiary was renamed as Capital One in October 1994, and its main business segment was only the credit cards.

       Since 1998, Capital One was looking to expand into auto loans, and since 2005 it was looking to expand into retail banking.


       The company provides a wide range of financial products and services to consumers, small businesses and commercial clients in the U.S., Canada and the UK. It operates through the following business segments: Credit Cards, Checking & Savings, Auto Loans, Business, and Commercial.

    Business

       The Business segment involves business credit cards and a range of business banking services, such as checking & savings accounts, lending, merchant services, and others.

    Commercial

       The Commercial segment includes a full range of financial solutions, such as commercial lending, depository services, treasury management, capital markets, and corporate card. It also involves custom solutions that serve a multitude of industries, such as Commercial Real Estate, Healthcare, Energy, Financial Institutions, Municipal Finance, Technology, Media & Telecom, Government Contracting, Dealer Services, Vacation Ownership, Not-For-Profit, Maritime, Security Finance, Apparel, Gaming, Commercial & Industrial, Food, Beverage & Agriculture, or Financial Sponsor Group.


       With more than 47 000 employees, Capital One Financial Corporation is a Fortune 500 company, and it is considered one of the largest banks in America, one of the best banks in the world, as well as one of the largest auto finance company in the U.S. According to Fortune Magazine, it is considered one of the top 100 largest companies in the country and one of the World’s Most Admired Companies. According to Forbes, it is considered one of the top 2000 largest public companies in the world.
