It was founded on July 27, 1994, when Signet Financial Corp announced the corporate spin-off of its credit card division, OakStone Financial, with Richard Fairbank as CEO. Later, the subsidiary was renamed as Capital One in October 1994, and its main business segment was only the credit cards.
Since 1998, Capital One was looking to expand into auto loans, and since 2005 it was looking to expand into retail banking.
The company provides a wide range of financial products and services to consumers, small businesses and commercial clients in the U.S., Canada and the UK. It operates through the following business segments: Credit Cards, Checking & Savings, Auto Loans, Business, and Commercial.
