Delhaize Group SA – history, company profile (overview) and corporate video

Delhaize Group SA was a Belgian multinational food retailer headquartered in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, Brussels, Belgium. It mainly operated food supermarkets.

    HISTORY

Delhaize’s history began in 1867 when Jules Delhaize, his brother Edouard and his brother-in-law Jules Vieujant created a network for food retailing in Charleroi, Belgium. They chose the lion as their logo.

In 1883, Delhaize started manufacturing and setting up factories that produced foods under its own brand name: chocolate and biscuit factories, a distillery, and coffee roasting.

In 1914, Delhaize had 23 factories.

During the crisis of the thirties (1919-1939), Delhaize expanded its assortment with its own discount brand Derby.

In 1957, the company opened its first supermarket in Belgium (Place Flagey, Brussels). It was Belgium’s first fully self-service supermarket, with pre-packaged meat and frozen food.

In 1962, BRUSSELS Delhaize was listed on the Brussels Stock Exchange.

In 1974, Delhaize acquired a stake in the Food Town chain, operating 22 supermarkets in the U.S.

In 1997, Delhaize Group acquired stakes in Indonesia.

In 2001, NY Delhaize Group was introduced on the New York Stock Exchange.

In 2005, Delhaize Group acquired the Belgian supermarket chain Cash Fresh.

In 2011, after acquiring a Serbian retailer, Delhaize Group became one of the leading food retailers in Southeastern Europe.

In 2014, Delhaize Group signed an agreement to sell its Bottom Dollar food store locations in the U.S. to Aldi, Inc.

In 2016, Ahold merged with Delhaize Group, forming a new parent/holding company: Ahold Delhaize.
