Electricity, the clean response to insatiable global demand
As economic development lifts millions of people out of poverty and a growing middle class and manufacturing industry emerge in populous countries like India, China, and Brazil, demand for energy will explode. Not to mention the already voracious energy appetite in developed countries—financial crises notwithstanding—whetted even further by new technological advancements, especially in telecommunications.The International Energy Agency (IEA) predicts global energy demand to skyrocket 75% between 2007 and 2030, ballooning from 19.756 TWh to 34.292 TWh; the same agency says energy demand could even double. Over 80% of this growth is expected to come from emerging countries, led by China and India, as their economies mature. In the developed world, France’s national grid operator has indicated that new power generation capacity, mainly from renewable sources, will be crucial for meeting the country’s robust demand.
Cutting GHG emissions with low-carbon electricity
There is no question that low-carbon electricity will play a key role in the fight against climate change. If nothing is done to break the world’s addiction to fossil fuels (read: oil and gas), annual greenhouse gas emissions could double—further eroding the hole in the ozone layer and accelerating global warming.That’s why we at EDF are committed to generating low-carbon electricity from an energy mix comprised of both nuclear and renewable sources. We are convinced that it is the only responsible way to meet rising demand from the developed and developing world. And we are not alone—an increasing number of experts agree that a mix of different types of (preferably renewable) energies is the only way forward if we want to couple economic development with the protection of our exhaustible natural resources.”
