Hearst Corporation history, profile and history video

Founded in 1887 by William Randolph Hearst, the Hearst Corporation has interests in magazines, newspapers, and business publishing, as well as newspaper comics, features syndication and Internet activities. Hearst also operates radio and television stations and produces television programs. The company is a partner in several cable ventures, including Lifetime, Arts & Entertainment, the History Channel, and ESPN.”

    “Hearst History

Since March 4, 1887, Hearst has grown from a single newspaper into one of the world’s most admired private media and information companies with some 200 businesses in more than 150 countries.

On March 4, 1887, William Randolph Hearst placed his name on the masthead of the San Francisco Examiner as “Proprietor” for the first time. W.R. Hearst died in 1951, but his legacy, Hearst Corporation, has continued to grow and prosper. It is clear Hearst is a very different company than it was in 1887, but, in another sense, Hearst has not changed at all: Our company’s mission is still to inform, entertain and inspire. Hearst is continuing a legacy of innovation—and a love of what’s next.

The iconic nature of W.R. Hearst—an important and indelible part of American history—has long enthralled the public, and was famously dramatized in the 1941 filmCitizen Kane starring Orson Welles. In 2012, in conjunction with Hearst Corporation’s 125th anniversary, filmmaker Leslie Iwerks released Citizen Hearst, a documentary exploring the story of W.R. Hearst and one of America’s best-known companies. The film was released in select theaters nationwide and debuted on BIO on April 23, 2012. Citizen Hearst, produced by Iwerks and Jane Kelly Kosek, is the first in-depth look at how the company has navigated the changing times over the span of two centuries.”
