Inter RAO was established in 1997 as a subsidiary of RAO United Energy Systems of Russia focused on export and import of electricity.
Prior to completion of energy industry reform in summer 2008, INTER RAO UES went through reorganization into a public company and completed an IPO on MICEX and RTS stock exchanges. At the same time, INTER RAO UES acquired a number of international assets and several Russian power plants mainly located near borders of Russia and primarily focused on export of electricity.
In 2009 the shares of INTER RAO UES were included in MSCI Emerging Markets Index.
In 2010 INTER RAO UES approved a medium-term development strategy focused on making the company a top 10 player worldwide by 2020.
