KKR & Co. Inc., also known as Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co., is a global investment company that offers alternative asset management as well as capital markets and insurance solutions. It is headquartered in New York, United States.
KKR invests across the alternative asset classes in private equity, real estate, credit and hedge funds as well as in infrastructure, energy, tech, health care, insurance and others.
HISTORY
Henry Kravis and George Roberts decided to found Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. in 1976 over dinner at Joe and Rose Restaurant.
Until then, Jerome Kohlberg, Henry Kravis and George Roberts worked for Bear Stearns, an equity trading house. At Bear Stearns, they completed a series of investments targeting family-owned businesses that were facing succession issues.
However, tensions had built up between Bear Stearns and Kohlberg, Kravis and Roberts, which led to the formation of Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co.
In 1987, Jerome Kohlberg resigned and later founded his own private equity firm, Kohlberg & Co.
In 1998, KKR opened the London office, expanding its Europe footprint.
In 2000, the KKR Capstone entity was officially developed.
In 2004, KKRโs credit investing platform was launched.
In 2006, KKR Capital Markets was launched.
In 2007, KKR opened the Hong Kong and Tokyo offices, expanding its Asia footprint.
In 2009, KKR expanded to the Middle East and India with office openings in Dubai and Mumbai. That year, KKR also formed dedicated infrastructure and energy platforms.
In 2010, KKR was listed on New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).
In 2011, the Global Macro & Asset Allocation Team was created to provide insights on the economy. That year, KKR also created a dedicated real estate platform.
In 2013, the KKR Global Institute was created to provide insights on geopolitical and global trends.
In 2014, KKR formed Health Care Growth equity effort.
In 2015, KKR entered into a strategic partnership with Marshall Wace, a global alternative investment manager specializing in long/short equity products.
In 2017, KKR entered into a strategic transaction to create PAAMCO Prisma, a new liquid alternatives investment firm that combined the businesses of PAAMCO and Prisma Capital Partners.
