       Lumen Technologies is an American multinational technology company headquartered in Monroe, Louisiana, United States.


       Lumen was founded in 1930 when its earliest predecessor Oak Ridge Telephone Company, owned by F. E. Hogan, Sr., was sold to William Clarke and Marie Williams.

       In 1946, the Williams’ son, Clarke McRae Williams, received ownership of the family’s telephone company.

       In 1967, the company was incorporated as Central Telephone and Electronics.

       In 1971, the company was renamed Century Telephone Enterprises, Inc.

       In 1997, Century Telephone acquired its largest acquisition up until that time, Pacific Telecom, Inc. Pacific Telecom was later renamed CenturyTel of the Northwest, Inc.

       In 1999, the company was renamed CenturyTel, Inc.

       In December 2003, CenturyTel acquired the Midwest Fiber Optic Network (MFON) from Level 3 Communications, Inc.

       In 2004, it partnered with EchoStar Communications Corporation for DISH Network multi-channel digital TV.

       On July 1, 2009, Embarq, one of the largest independent local exchange carriers in the United States, was acquired by CenturyTel, Inc.

       In May 2010, the new corporate name of the combined CenturyTel/Embarq entity became CenturyLink, Inc.

       On April 1, 2011, CenturyLink acquired Qwest Communications International, Inc., one of the largest United States telecommunications carriers, in a stock-for-stock transaction.

       On July 15, 2011, CenturyLink acquired Savvis, Inc., a global provider of cloud infrastructure and hosted IT services.

       On January 9, 2017, CenturyLink announced the acquisition of Edison, one of the largest SAP services providers.

       On November 1, 2017, CenturyLink acquired Level 3 Communications in a deal valued at around $25 billion.

       In  2020, CenturyLink, Inc. changed its name to Lumen Technologies, Inc. The CenturyLink brand will continue to be a brand for traditional copper-based services.


       The company brings together the capabilities of CenturyLink, Level 3, and 25+ other technology companies, offering Networking, Communications, Security, Edge Computing, and Hybrid Cloud solutions.


       The Networking segment involves Software-Defined Networking (SDN solutions), cloud connectivity, internet & networking solutions (ethernet, internet, MPLS/IP VPN, private line, etc.), content delivery, and managed & it services.


       The Communications segment offers calling services (international, local voice, and long-distance & toll-free services), unified communications (conferencing and integrated collaboration with voice, video and web solutions), contact centre, and next-generation voice.


       The Security segment focuses on threat management, DDoS mitigation, managed firewalls, threat research, and professional security services.

    Edge Computing

       The Edge Computing segment involves edge computing, private cloud, managed services, network storage, and Web Application Firewall solutions.

    Hybrid Cloud

       The Hybrid Cloud segment focuses on hybrid infrastructure, cloud connectivity, managed cloud, and managed & IT services.

       With more than 39,000 employees, Lumen Technologies is considered one of the top 2000 largest public companies in the world, according to Forbes.
