    “Manulife Financial: Historic Milestones

Since welcoming its first customers more than 125 years ago, Manulife Financial has grown into a leading global financial services group with principal operations in Asia, Canada and the United States.

The company’s deep history began in 1887 under Sir John A. Macdonald, Canada’s first Prime Minister who was also Manulife’s first president.

Manulife began expanding internationally in 1893 with operations in the Caribbean, quickly followed by entry to Asia in 1897 and the United States in 1903.

In the 1980s and 1990s Manulife grew through mergers and acquisitions, leading to its largest acquisition to date, the 2004 integration of U.S. based John Hancock Financial Services. That made Manulife at the time the largest life insurer in Canada, second largest in North America, and fifth largest in the world.

In 2008 Gail Cook-Bennett became the first female Chair of the Board and in 2009, Donald Guloien became our 13th president. You’ll find more details on these and other milestones below.
