       Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Inc., also known as MUFG (Mitsubishi and United Financial of Japan), 株式会社三菱UFJフィナンシャル・グループ, or Kabushiki gaisha Mitsubishi Yūefujei Finansharu Gurūpu, is a Japanese bank holding and financial services company headquartered in Tokyo, Japan. It was founded on October 1, 2005, after the merger of Mitsubishi Tokyo Financial Group, Inc. (MTFG) and UFJ Holdings, Inc.

      Mitsubishi Tokyo Financial Group, Inc. was formed in April 1996, with the merger of The Bank of Tokyo (founded in 1946) and Mitsubishi Bank, Ltd. (founded in 1919). The Bank of Tokyo’s origins date back to 1880, when it was founded Yokohama Specie Bank, one of the precursors of the company. The Mitsubishi Bank’s origins date back to the same year, 1880, when the precursor Mitsubishi Exchange House was founded by former samurai Yataro Iwasaki. 

    UFJ Holdings, Inc.

       UFJ (United Financial of Japan) Holdings, Inc. was formed on April 1, 2001, with the merger of 3 companies: Sanwa Bank, a banking company that dates to 1656, Tokai Bank, and Toyo Trust & Banking Co. Ltd, a part of the Toyota Motor Corporation.


       Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Inc. operates through the following segments: Retail & Commercial Banking Business Group (R&C), Japanese Corporate & Investment Banking Business Group (JCIB), Global Corporate & Investment Banking Business Group (GCIB), Global Commercial Banking Business Group (GCB), Asset Management & Investor Services Business Group (AM/IS), and Global Markets Business Group.

    R&C

       The R&C segment provides residential mortgage loans, lending, wealth management, and settlement services, but also business and asset succession solutions to individual customers and SMEs.

    JCIB

       The JCIB segment provides loans, settlement, forex, and other services to major Japanese corporations.

    GCIB

       The GCIB segment provides a set of solutions regarding the financing needs, including transaction banking and various advisory services to non-Japanese large corporate and financial institution customers.

    GCB

       The GCB segment provides financial services with local SMEs and individual customers in countries overseas.

    AM/IS

       The AM/IS includes asset management, investor services, and pensions.

    Global Markets Business Group

       The Global Markets Business Group segment provides sales & trading (S&T) operations associated with interest rates, bonds, forex and equities in addition to engaging in treasury operations.
