Until May 1998, it was named as First Empire State Corporation.
Between 1987 and 2009, M&T Bank acquired over 20 financial institutions.
In May 2011, M&T acquired Wilmington Trust, which is currently a provider of international corporate and institutional services, investment management, and private banking.
