    HISTORY

PGNiG was established in 1982 as Przedsiębiorstwo Państwowe Polskie Górnictwo Naftowe i Gazownictwo. The company’s activities included both the exploration and exploitation of oil and natural gas deposits, as well as the supply of raw materials to the population and industry.

In 1996, Przedsiębiorstwo Państwowe PGNiG was transformed into a joint-stock company wholly owned by the State Treasury.

In 2004, the transmission activity was separated by establishing the company PGNiG-Transmission (currently OGP-Gaz System), which manages the transmission network and conducts operator activities.

In 2005, PGNiG was listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange.

In 2007, 6 Distribution System Operators (currently Polska Spółka Gazownictwa) were established due to a legal obligation to separate gas distribution from commercial activities and to unbundle distribution system operators.

In 2014, PGNiG Obrót Detaliczny was created due to legal conditions and the need to prepare for the upcoming full liberalization of the gas market in Poland.

In July 2020, PKN Orlen announced its intention to take over PGNiG.

With more than 20,000 employees, PGNiG Group is considered one of the largest oil and gas exploration and production companies in Poland. According to Forbes, it is considered one of the Largest Public Companies in the World.
