In 1982, the company acquired nursing home operator Cenco.
In 1992, the company spun off Vitalink Pharmacy Services into a public company.
In 1996, the company spun off Choice Hotels, refocusing its business on health care.

In 2018, HCR ManorCare was acquired by ProMedica.
Health Care and Retirement Corporation
Health Care and Retirement Corporation (HCR) was created in 1991 to purchase O-I’s healthcare businesses. O-I entered the healthcare field in 1929 when Owens Bottle Company merged with Illinois Glass Company, a manufacturer of glass products for the drug and medical fields, to form Owens-Illinois Glass Company.
In 1982, O-I created a healthcare group, which included pharmaceutical packaging operations that made scientific glassware.
In 1982, O-I also began diversification into health care by making an equity investment in Health Group Inc. (HGI) of Nashville, Tennessee, a hospital management group that owned specialty hospitals and several nursing homes.
In 1984, O-I acquired the Health Care and Retirement Corporation of America (HCRA). Starting as a lumber company in 1944, HCRA expanded into constructing nursing homes for third parties and, in 1974, began management of its first facility.
With more than 45,000 employees, ProMedica Senior Care is considered one of the Largest Public Companies in the World, according to Forbes.
