RWE AG is a German electric utilities company headquartered in Essen, Germany. It was founded in April 1898 as the Rheinisch-Westfälisches Elektrizitätswerk, an electricity supplier of the city of Essen.
The company operates through the following four subsidiaries: RWE Renewables GmbH, RWE Generation SE, RWE Power AG, and RWE Supply & Trading GmbH.
RWE Renewables GmbH
It produces electricity from renewable energy sources, in particular wind and photovoltaics.
RWE Generation SE
It is responsible for electricity generation from gas, hard coal, hydropower and biomass.
RWE Power AG
It produces electricity from lignite and nuclear energy. The nuclear power activities of the RWE Group is managed through RWE Nuclear GmbH, a fully owned subsidiary of RWE AG, managed by RWE Power AG.
RWE Supply & Trading GmbH
It provides the interface between RWE and energy markets around the globe, and it trades electricity, gas, commodities and CO2 emission certificates.
With more than 19 000 employees, RWE AG is considered one of the largest electricity producers in Germany, one of the biggest energy suppliers in Europe, one of Europe’s largest renewable energy providers, and one of the largest in the market for offshore wind power in Europe. According to Forbes, it is considered one of the top 2000 largest public companies in the world.
