Its display segment produces color cathode ray tubes (CRTs) and plasma display panels (PDPs) used for televisions and monitors. Its energy segment produces batteries, such as lithium-ion batteries and rechargeable batteries, as well as solar cells. The Company distributes its products within domestic market and to overseas markets. The Company took over the solar cell business from Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. on July 1, 2011. 1990s
Growth into the world’s No.1 display manufacturer through globalization. The strategy of Samsung SDI in the 1990s was to implement globalization through diversification of manufacturing bases around the world.
It planned to uplift the world market share 25% by ensuring world`s strongholds linking Malaysia, Germany, Mexico, China and Brazil and this plan was fulfilled exceedingly. On the other hand, as the digital and mobile world is rapidly growing, LCD concentrated on small-size displays for mobile phones. It opened market extension and renaissance for mobile phones VFD was able to jump into world`s second-best VFD maker as productivity and quality were optimized.
In 1995, the construction of Cheonan Plant began and focused on promoting new businesses such as rechargeable batteries and PDP, etc. It came to begin in earnest to promote businesses, corresponding to the future after flat display and Braun tube. Since, Cheonan plant has been growing as the Mecca of new business.
1980s
Opening the era of full-color television through mass production of color Braun tubes with the goal of producing 10 million color Braun tubes since 1984…
Samsung SDI built Suwon Factory in 1978 and commenced manufacturing Braun tube color televisions, opening the era of color TV in Korea.
Since 1984, it had a goal to build 10 million color Braun tubes’ and SDI concentrated all its efforts on building 10 million color Braun tubes, the great dream of 10% world demand.
As a result, in 1988, it completed building 10 million color Braun tubes at last and it was the milestone for Samsung SDI to jump into a global company. With the promotion of Braun tube business, Samsung SDI paid attention to flat display in the middle of the 1980s and started to study new displays such as LCD, VFD, etc. Business diversification of Samsung SDI had already begun in the middle of the 1980s.
1970s
Solidifying the basis for rapid growth with black and white Braun tubesSamsung-NEC, the former body of Samsung SDI, commenced its business on January 20, 1970.
Samsung SDI, established with target business is for major electric parts at that time such as vacuum tube, Braun tube, and electric discharge indicator tube, among inferior domestic electric industry, challenged to installable parts business complicated and required much investment cost, so that became spearhead that lead domestic electric parts to be the best level.
The vacuum tube which Samsung SDI produced for the first time was completed at first May 16 in 1970 that became the anniversary of founding Samsung SDI. Since, starting from black and white Braun tube, it developed ‘Quick Start Braun Tube’ for the first time in Korea and third time in the world in 1974 and built a strong foundation for high-speed growth.”
