       SK Telecom Co., Ltd. (에스케이텔레콤주식회사) is a wireless telecommunications company headquartered in Jung District, Seoul, South Korea. It is one of the largest mobile operators in Korea.

       The company operates through the following business sectors: Wired and wireless communication, Media, SKT Enterprise, Aiverse, Connected and Intelligence.

    HISTORY


       SK Telecom’s origins date back to 1984 when the predecessor of SK Telecom, Korea Mobile Telecom Services, began the history of mobile communications, launching vehicle phones and wireless paging services.

       In 1988, it introduced the portable mobile phone service for the first time in Korea.

       In 1994, Korea Mobile Telecom was acquired and privatized by SK Group (then Sunkyung Group) through an open bidding, in accordance with the government’s privatization policy to strengthen the competitiveness of the domestic telecommunications industry in the early 1990s.

       In 1996, SK Telecom (formerly Korea Mobile Telecom), which newly started as a private company, started commercializing CDMA digital mobile phones for the first time in the world.

       In 1997, SK Telecom changed its name from Korea Mobile Telecom to SK Telecom.

       In 2002, the company launched “June,” a wired/wireless video service, and NATE, an integrated wired/wireless Internet service.

       In 2004, SK Telecom pioneered the mobile media content market by launching the wired/wireless music portal “Melon,” movie portal “Sizzle,” and 3D game portal “GXG” in sequence

       In 2007, the company became the world’s first to provide mobile broadcasting services in 3G based on WIPI.

       In 2007, the world’s first mobile-based navigation service “Nate Drive” was also relaunched as “TMAP”.

       In 2011, SK Telecom commercialized the 4G LTE service for the first time in Korea.

       In 2012, Hynix was acquired and incorporated as a subsidiary of SK Telecom. SK Hynix became a global semiconductor company.

       In 2018, the company acqurired SK Shieldus and IDQ, one of the world’s largest providers in quantum crypto solutions.

       In 2019, SK Telecom announced the launching of the world’s first 5G roaming service partnering with Swisscom

       In 2020, SK Telecom entered in a partnership with Uber Technologies, to form a subsidiary called T Map Mobility.

       In 2021, SK Telecom spun off of a new company focusing on investments, semiconductors and ICT, SK Square.


       With more than 40,000 employees, SK Telecom Co., Ltd.  is considered one of the South Korea’s largest mobile operators and one of the largest wireless carriers. According to Forbes, it is considered one of the Largest Public Companies in the World.
