Last month, Laurence Escalante resigned as CEO of Virtual Gaming Worlds (VGW), the operator behind hugely popular sweepstakes gaming sites Chumba Casino and Global Poker.
It marks the end of one of iGaming’s biggest ever entrepreneurial success stories, with Escalante having turned VGW into a billion-dollar company over the course of his 16-year stint at the top.
The Australia-based sweepstakes casino billionaire initially took a five-month leave of absence before stepping down, which came off the back of his arrest earlier this year where he allegedly got into a physical altercation with his former partner at her property.
As it stands, Escalante is facing a string of family violence and drug-possession charges. Prior to the arrest, VGW investors were already said to be enraged and questioning the 44-year-old’s leadership, so his arrest was very much the straw that broke the camel’s back.
And despite recently hitting $5.2 billion revenue before going private, the fall of Escalante has certainly rocked the VGW ship, as the company has already spent the past two years fighting harsh regulatory crackdowns on the US sweepstakes casino market.
Escalante Helped Build $9.1 Billion Sweepstakes Casino Market
Back during the first COVID-19 lockdown, around half of the world’s population found themselves stuck in their homes with nowhere to go.
This led to an utter explosion for the ‘freemium’ games market. Among Us and Activision Blizzard’s Call of Duty: Warzone were extremely hot during this period, but it was the sweepstakes casinos that perhaps benefited the most.
Since 2020, sweepstakes casinos have become a juggernaut in US gaming. It’s been impossible to escape these free-to-play casinos, where players bet virtual ‘Sweeps Coins’ rather than actual cash, and the two most popular have been VGW’s Chumba Casino and LuckyLand Slots.
On top of this is the still-popular but slightly more niche Global Poker, with all three of these sites initially spearheaded by VGW and Escalante’s vision for social gaming (bizarrely, Escalante ran a Christian gaming start-up company before founding VGW after realizing the potential of the market).
In the sweepstakes casino world, Chumba Casino is widely regarded as one of the greatest sweepstakes casinos ever made. Even today, it’s the site that most newbie players opt to sign up with and old-school players stay loyal to.
Without Chumba Casino and its sister site LuckyLand Slots, it’s highly unlikely that the sweepstakes casino market, currently valued at just over $9 billion, would ever have reached the scale that it has.
What Escalante did was, from a pure business perspective, genius. Up until recent times, where America’s attitude towards online gambling has softened, it was very difficult for online casinos to operate and attract lots of players.
So, Escalante and his people at VGW decided to create a small number of sweepstakes-style casinos, ones where virtual coins are used under a ‘sweepstakes’ model instead of money, and it allowed them to dodge traditional gambling laws while still gaining access to almost every state in the country.
Smartly, Escalante was aware that his gaming platforms would still require some type of prize-winning element in order to keep players coming through the door, so they created a system where these virtual Sweeps Coins could be exchanged for gift cards, cash transfers, and other prizes (again, because Sweeps Coins have no value in the real world, they aren’t categorized as legitimate gambling currency, making it perfectly legal for players to exchange them for prizes).
This sweepstakes prize redemption model is now used by all of the other sweepstakes casinos on the internet, proving to be one of iGaming’s biggest ever money-makers.
Escalante alone has a personal fortune of over $1 billion with plenty of superyachts and exotic cars to go with it, while VGW itself is worth well into the billions.
Across Kick and Twitch, sweepstakes casinos are used by countless popular streamers, while the likes of Drake and Adin Ross have even gotten involved in the industry to promote Stake.us, which is one of the other leading sweepstakes casinos next to Chumba.
The sweepstakes casino market is an unbelievably hot commodity and Escalante was, undoubtedly, the pioneering force behind it all, which has made his downfall over the past couple of years even more fascinating to witness.
Escalante’s Damaged Reputation and Recent Arrest Left No Other Option But to Step Down
Up until early 2024, VGW was riding high alongside many of the other sweepstakes casino operators, who were enjoying the riches from an unbelievable boom period.
But once it became apparent just how big the US sweepstakes casino market had become, state lawmakers started taking a closer look at these previously unknown sites. And some didn’t like what they saw.
A growing number of states have now outright banned sweepstakes casinos or placed heavy restrictive measures on them, arguing that these sites are designed to mimic regular online casinos but use the dual-currency sweepstakes system to avoid traditional gambling laws.
This list of states includes California and New York, where VGW once had huge markets, as well as Indiana, Maine, New Jersey, Louisiana, Montana, Nevada, and Washington.
This seemed to be the potential trigger point for Escalante going off the rails, as VGW shareholders started to question his leadership during this time and the billionaire’s social media posts kept getting more erratic by the week.
VGW has been continuously scrutinized about its governance and transparency, which Escalante never handled particularly well.
His arrest earlier this year then came as little surprise following a highly chaotic year for the 44-year-old. The nature of the charges, relating to potential assault and drug possession, have ultimately been the nail in the coffin for his reputation and the leave of absence he immediately took after was always going to be followed up with a resignation, which was in July.
In the aftermath, VGW also made the shocking announcement they’d be shutting down some of their casinos as part of the new leadership direction, including one of the player-favorites LuckyLand Slots.
Escalante himself has been quiet since, although he did win another bail variation this past week. The case will remain ongoing, but it’s relatively safe to assume that gambling’s most famous billionaire likely won’t be returning to VGW, or the sweepstakes casino industry at all, anytime in the near future.

There Are Now Close to 300 Sweepstakes Casinos on the Market

As the end of 2026 approaches, there are now close to 300 sweepstakes casinos on the market, with new sites hitting the internet every month that goes by as new operators look to get a slice of the sweepstakes pie.
Pre-2020, you could count the number of sweepstakes casinos on one hand.
It’s now an astonishingly large industry that’s been super-charged by the desire of Gen Z and Millennials to play instant-win games like slots and potentially win prizes in the process, and almost none of it would exist without Escalante’s VGW.
The industry will no doubt rake in at least another billion before the year closes, too, despite the fact it’s having to deal with a wave of recent state bans (had these bans not taken place, the sweepstakes casino industry would likely have generated over $10 billion revenue this year).
What’s Next for Escalante’s Empire?
Escalante is currently facing up to 25 years in prison following the recent charges brought against him.
He’s gone on record to the Sydney Morning Herald that the allegations are false, but even if this is the case, the man behind Chumba Casino and LuckyLand Slots will struggle to rebuild his reputation from this.
Moving forward, VGW will no doubt look to continue taking advantage of America’s new obsession with sweepstakes gaming sites, only this time no longer under the leadership of Mr. Escalante.
