Cannabis Market Research On Industry Growth To 2030

US legal cannabis revenue fell to $29.1 billion in 2025 from $30.1 billion in 2024, the first year-over-year decline since adult-use sales began in 2014.

Whitney Economics forecasts $30.5 billion in 2026, a 4.9% rebound, reaching $43.3 billion by 2030. Chief economist Beau Whitney attributes the 2025 drop to supply saturation and pricing compression rather than weaker demand, and says the firm rebuilt its model to account for price deflation.

Federal policy shifted in April 2026. A Justice Department final rule placed FDA-approved marijuana products and marijuana regulated under a state medical marijuana license in Schedule III, per DEA. All other marijuana stays in Schedule I, and a hearing on broader rescheduling was set to open June 29, 2026 and conclude no later than July 15, 2026.

FAQs

How big is the US cannabis market in 2026?

Headset recorded $24.3 billion in dispensary sales across 16 tracked state markets in the 12 months to June 2026. Whitney Economics forecasts $30.5 billion in total US legal cannabis revenue for calendar 2026.

Why do Reddit threads say cannabis sales are falling when reports show growth?

Both readings are correct. In the 12 months to June 2026, Headset recorded dollar sales up 0.8% while unit sales rose 5.5%. Volume is growing; falling prices absorb the difference.

Which state cannabis market is growing fastest?

New York, up 34.2% year over year to $1.82 billion, followed by Ohio at 26.0%. Nevada fell the most at -12.3%, per Headset point-of-sale data for the 12 months ending June 2026.

Is cannabis legal under federal law in 2026?

Not broadly. A Justice Department final rule moved FDA-approved marijuana products and state-licensed medical marijuana to Schedule III in April 2026. All other marijuana remains Schedule I, per DEA.

What do Reddit posts get wrong about cannabis market size numbers?

They mix measurements. Headset’s $24.3 billion is register data from 16 states for the year to June 2026. Whitney Economics’ $30.5 billion is a national revenue forecast for 2026. The two are not interchangeable.
