Five research firms put the 2026 reusable water bottle market anywhere between USD 9.3 billion and USD 12.92 billion, a USD 3.62 billion gap for the same year. At the same time, Circana’s US point-of-sale tracking shows the category slowing sharply after its 2023 peak. This post compares the forecasts, the measured retail data, and the January 2024 PNAS nanoplastics study that reshaped the demand argument.
Reusable Water Bottle Market Statistics
How Big Is the Reusable Water Bottle Market in 2026?
Five firms published 2026 estimates for the global reusable water bottle market, and they do not agree. The lowest, from Future Market Insights, sits at USD 9.3 billion. The highest, from 360iResearch, reaches USD 12.92 billion, which is 39% above the lowest.
Each figure represents that firm’s own modeled global vendor revenue under its own scope definition, so no single number should be quoted without its source.
| Research firm | 2026 estimate | Forecast endpoint | Published CAGR |
|---|---|---|---|
| Future Market Insights | USD 9.3 billion | USD 12.2 billion by 2036 | 2.8% |
| Precedence Research | USD 10.64 billion | USD 15.92 billion by 2035 | 4.58% |
| Persistence Market Research | USD 11.2 billion | USD 16.0 billion by 2033 | 5.2% |
| Fortune Business Insights | USD 11.56 billion | USD 17.36 billion by 2034 | 5.21% |
| 360iResearch | USD 12.92 billion | USD 21.96 billion by 2032 | 9.19% |

Four of the five growth rates cluster between 2.8% and 5.21%. That leaves 360iResearch’s 9.19% as the outlier, not the consensus.
Reusable Water Bottle Market Retail Data From Circana
Circana’s point-of-sale tracking measures actual US sell-through rather than modeled global revenue. The portable beveragewear category reached USD 3.1 billion in 2024, up 15%, based on Circana data reported by Marketing Dive.
The slowdown shows up at sporting goods retailers. Sales of water bottles and insulated containers there grew 38% in 2023 and 14% in 2024, a 24 percentage point drop in one year.
| Measure | Figure |
|---|---|
| US portable beveragewear retail sales, 2024 | USD 3.1 billion, up 15% |
| Water bottle sales growth at US sporting goods retailers, 2023 | 38% |
| Water bottle sales growth at US sporting goods retailers, 2024 | 14% |
| US sporting goods retailers, Sept 2024 to Feb 2025 | Year-over-year decline every month |

Matt Tucker, a sports equipment analyst at Circana, told Modern Retail that sporting goods retailers recorded year-over-year declines in bottles and insulated containers every month from September 2024 through February 2025.
Scope matters when reading these two datasets together. Circana’s USD 3.1 billion covers US portable beveragewear at tracked retail, while the forecasts above cover modeled global revenue across channels Circana does not measure. Retailers such as Target and Amazon sit inside both the tracked and untracked sides of that picture depending on the dataset.
What Is Driving Reusable Water Bottle Demand? The PNAS Study
A study published in January 2024 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences by Columbia and Rutgers researchers counted an average of about 240,000 plastic particles per liter of bottled water, 10 to 100 times higher than earlier estimates.
The jump reflects a measurement change, not a contamination change. A 2018 study detected an average of 325 particles per liter because it counted only microplastics down to one micron. The 2024 team used stimulated Raman scattering microscopy to detect particles down to 100 nanometers, and 90% of what they found was in that nanoplastic range.
| Finding | Value |
|---|---|
| Average plastic particles per liter of bottled water | About 240,000 |
| Observed range across samples | 110,000 to 370,000 |
| Share identified as nanoplastics | 90% |
| Increase over previous estimates | 10 to 100 times |
| Prior 2018 estimate, microplastics only | 325 particles per liter |
| Plastic types the team screened for | 7 |

The researchers traced much of the plastic to the bottle itself and to the reverse osmosis membrane filter used in production, according to lead author Naixin Qian. The samples came from three popular US bottled water brands, which the team declined to name.
The International Bottled Water Association responded that there is currently no standardized measuring method and no scientific consensus on the health impacts of nano- and microplastic particles. Bottled water sellers include brands owned by PepsiCo, Coca-Cola, and Nestlé.
Persistence Market Research names consumer awareness of microplastic contamination in bottled water, citing this PNAS study, as one of the drivers behind its 5.2% growth forecast.
Reusable Water Bottle Market Segments and Channels
Material rankings depend on which firm’s segmentation you read. Persistence Market Research puts plastic in the lead at roughly 36% of the 2026 market, held there by lower price points and mass-retail availability. Future Market Insights instead puts metal and stainless steel on top at 39.4% of its material segment for 2026.
On channels, Future Market Insights projects hypermarkets and supermarkets at 41.7% of its distribution segment in 2026. Fortune Business Insights puts the offline segment at 63.39% of the market in 2026, with online growing fastest at a published CAGR of 5.78%.
Regionally, Fortune Business Insights reports Asia Pacific held 39.60% of the market in 2025. Future Market Insights projects India as a fast-growing country market at a 6.5% CAGR through 2036.

Which Brands Lead the Reusable Water Bottle Market?
Stanley’s parent company, Pacific Market International, does not publish brand-level financials, so revenue figures are reported estimates. Per data reviewed by CNBC, Stanley’s annual revenue was USD 73 million in 2019, USD 94 million in 2020, USD 194 million in 2021, USD 402 million in 2022, and was projected to top USD 750 million in 2023.
Owala moved the other direction on the share ledger. About 1.5% of US consumers bought an Owala bottle in 2023, up from about 0.8% in 2022, and it became the top-selling US stainless steel water bottle in 2023, based on Circana data.
| Metric | Figure | Period |
|---|---|---|
| US consumers who bought an Owala bottle | About 0.8% | 2022 |
| US consumers who bought an Owala bottle | About 1.5% | 2023 |

Piper Sandler’s spring 2025 Taking Stock With Teens survey, a self-reported survey of 6,455 US teens with an average age of 16.2, captured the ambiguity around Stanley. Female teens ranked Stanley cups as a top five fashion trend, while upper-income females also ranked them as the No. 2 fashion trend on its way out.
What the Reusable Water Bottle Market Data Shows
Three points hold up. The 2026 forecast spread of USD 3.62 billion means any market size claim needs a named source attached.
Measured US retail growth decelerated from 38% to 14% between 2023 and 2024, then went negative for six straight months at sporting goods retailers, which none of the five forecast trajectories describe.
The category’s strongest health argument rests on a 2024 measurement breakthrough rather than a change in bottled water itself, and the bottled water industry disputes that health conclusions can yet be drawn from it.
