       Enbridge Inc. is a diversified energy company headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It operates through the following business sectors: Liquids pipelines, Natural gas pipelines, Gas distribution and storage, and Renewable energy.

       The name “Enbridge” combines “energy” with “bridge”.

    HISTORY


       The company was established in 1949 by Imperial Oil as Interprovincial Pipe Line Company (IPL).

       In 1953, IPL was listed on the Toronto and Montreal stock exchanges.

       In 1983, IPL built the Norman Wells pipeline and joined Frontier Pipeline Company.

       In 1986, IPL acquired Toronto-based Home Oil.

       In 1988, IPL changed its name to Interhome Energy Inc.

       In 1991, Interhome shareholders voted to create two separate companies: New Home Oil Company Ltd., a distinct publicly traded company, and Interprovincial Pipe Line Inc., consisting of wholly owned subsidiaries Lakehead Pipe Line Company Inc. and Interprovincial Pipeline (NW) Ltd.

       In 1994, the company changed its name to IPL Energy Inc.

       In 1996, IPL Energy acquired Consumers’ Gas, Canada’s largest natural gas distribution system at that time. The roots of what is now known as Enbridge Gas Inc. can be traced back to 1848.

       In 1998, IPL Energy changed its name to Enbridge Inc.

       In 2001, Enbridge’s shares were first listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

       In 2001, the company also acquired Houston’s Midcoast Energy Resources.

       In 2005, Enbridge acquired Shell Gas Transmission.

       In 2017, Enbridge merged with Spectra Energy to form one of the largest energy infrastructure companies in North America.


       With more than 11.000 employees, Enbridge Inc. is considered one of the world’s largest energy infrastructure companies. According to Forbes, it is considered one of the Largest Public Companies in the World.
