       Equinix Incorporated is a digital infrastructure company that specializes in Internet connection and data centers. It is headquartered in Redwood City, California, United States.

    HISTORY


       Equinix was founded in Silicon Valley in 1998 by Al Avery and Jay Adelson (two facilities managers at Digital Equipment Corporation), as a vendor-neutral multitenant data center provider where competing networks could securely connect and share data traffic.

       The company’s name was chosen to reflect the company’s focus on EQUality, Neutrality and Internet eXchange – Equinix.

       In 2002, Equinix merged with i-STT, allowing the company’s expansion in China, Singapore, Australia, and Japan.

       In 2007, Equinix acquired the data center operator IXEurope and its facilities, entering the European market.

       In 2010, Equinix acquired Switch and Data Facilities Company, a U.S. internet exchange and colocation services provider.

       In 2012, Equinix acquired the data center provider Asia-Tone in Hong Kong, extending its operations to the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

       In 2015, Equinix converted to a real estate investment trust (REIT), and the professional services company Nimbo was acquired.

       In November 2015, after Equinix agreed to sell eight of its data centers around Europe to Digital Realty, it acquired the British company TelecityGroup.

       In December 2015, the Japanese provider Bit-Isle was acquired.

       In January 2016, Equinix acquired Telecity.

       In 2016, Equinix announced a deal to acquire 29 data centers in 15 markets from Verizon.

       In 2017, Equinix acquired Itconic, expanding its data center to Spain and Portugal.

       In 2018, Equinix acquired the Australian data center provider Metronode.

       In 2020, Equinix acquired Packet, a startup that provided bare-metal servers as a cloud service.

       In August 2020, Equinix acquired GPX India, expanding into India.

       In December 2020, Equinix was listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange.
