     The Liebherr Group is a multinational construction machine manufacturer headquartered in Bulle, Switzerland.

    HISTORY


     In post-war Germany, Hans Liebherr recognized the need for tools and machinery for the building industry and domestic construction, and founded the Hans Liebherr Maschinenfabrik (engineering works) in 1949 in Kirchdorf. The company’s first product was the mobile tower crane, invented by Hans Liebherr together with design engineers and tradesmen.

     In 1954, the first refrigerator was built and series production began in 1955.

     In 1956, the range of construction machinery was extended to include machines for the production and transportation of concrete.

     At the end of the 1950s, Liebherr established companies in Ireland, South Africa, and Austria.

     In 1960, Hans Liebherr set up the Liebherr-Aero-Technik GmbH company in Lindenberg, in Allgäu (Germany). 

     In 1970, Liebherr-America Inc. was founded in Newport News, Virginia. The company supplied the North American market with hydraulic excavators, crawlers and wheel loaders and, in addition, represented the following areas: machine tools, material handling, and aeronautical equipment.

     In 1974, new companies follow in Guaratinguetá (Brazil) and Burlington, Ontario (Canada). In Europe, the company introduced new production sites in Austria and Switzerland.

     In 1983, Liebherr-International AG was established as the Group’s central holding company in Bulle, Switzerland.

     In 1997, the rental branch was established.

     In 2011, Liebherr-Mining Equipment Colmar SAS with a production and development site for mining excavators was founded in France.

     In 2011, Liebherr’s first production site in Russia was also opened at the Dzerzhinsk site.

     In 2012, the portfolio was extended to include concrete pumps.

     In 2015, Liebherr-Aerospace and Rolls Royce set up a 50:50 joint venture Aerospace Transmission Technologies GmbH in Friedrichshafen (Germany). Components of the power gearboxes for the new “UltraFan” engine design of Rolls Royce will be manufactured here.


     With more than 48,000 employees, Liebherr-International AG (Liebherr – International Group) is considered one of the largest construction machine manufacturers in the world. According to Forbes, it is considered one of the Largest Public Companies in the World.
