       Philip Morris International, Inc. (PMI) is an American multinational cigarette and tobacco manufacturing company headquartered in New York City, U.S.

       The company’s origins date back to the opening of a tobacco and cigarette shop by a London tobacconist, Philip Morris, in 1847.

       In 1881, Philip Morris’ son, Leopard Morris, with Joseph Grunebaum established “Philip Morris & Company and Grunebaum Ltd”.

       In 1885, the company was renamed as “Philip Morris & Co. Ltd.”

       In 1987, Philip Morris International was incorporated as an operating company of Philip Morris Companies Inc.

       Philip Morris Companies Inc. formally changed its name to the Altria Group, Inc. on January 27, 2003, but in March 2008, Philip Morris International was spun off from Altria Group.


       The company has six of the top 15 international brands in the world including: Marlboro (the world’s best-selling international cigarette), L&M, Chesterfield, Philip Morris, Parliament, and Bond Street. Other leading international brands include Virginia S., Lark, Merit, Muratti, Next, and Red & White.

       It also owns a number of important local cigarette brands, including: Dji Sam Soe, Sampoerna A and Sampoerna U in Indonesia; Fortune and Jackpot in the Philippines; Belmont and Canadian Classics in Canada; and Delicados in Mexico.

       In addition to the cigarette brand portfolio, the company also providing smoke-free alternatives to cigarettes, in the form of two breakthrough heated tobacco products, without burning or combustion (IQOS and TEEPS).

       IQOS is a precisely controlled heating device into which a specially designed tobacco product under the brand names HEETS and HeatSticks is inserted and heated to generate a flavorful nicotine-containing vapor.

       TEEPS is another heated tobacco product, which releases flavors and nicotine without combustion, but it heats the tobacco with a pressed carbon heat-source that is separate from the tobacco and, using patented HeatControl Technology, provides an effective and controlled temperature transfer to create a nicotine-containing vapor.


       With more than 73 000 employees and with products sold in over 180 countries, Philip Morris International Inc. (PMI) is considered one of the leading international tobacco companies. According to Forbes, it is considered one of the top 2000 largest public companies in the world.
