       Tripadvisor, Inc. is an online travel research company headquartered in Needham, Massachusetts, United States.

       Tripadvisor’s travel research platform aggregates reviews and opinions of members about destinations, accommodations (including hotels, B&Bs, specialty lodging and vacation rentals), restaurants and activities throughout the world through its flagship Tripadvisor brand.

       Through its subsidiaries, the company also offers online hotel reservations and bookings for transportation, lodging, travel experiences, and restaurants.

    HISTORY


       The original TripAdvisor business was founded in 2000 by Stephen Kaufer, Langley Steinert, Nick Shanny, and Thomas Palka.

       In 2004, was acquired by IAC/InterActiveCorp.

       In 2005, IAC/InterActiveCorp spun out its portfolio of travel brands, including Tripadvisor, into a separate company under the newly formed Delaware corporation, Expedia, Inc.

       In 2007, Smarter Travel Media and The Independent Traveler, Inc. were acquired.

       In 2008, Holiday Watchdog, Airfarewatchdog, Virtualtourist, and FlipKey.com were acquired.

    In 2010, holidaylettings.co.uk, one of the United Kingdom’s largest independent vacation rental websites, was acquired.

       In 2009, Kuxun.cn, one of China’s largest consumer travel sites and hotel and flight search engines, was acquired. Kuxun was later sold to Meituan.

       In 2011, Tripadvisor, Inc., a Delaware corporation, was formed in connection with the spin-off from Expedia to hold the travel media brands associated with the Tripadvisor businesses, as reflected in the TripAdvisor Holdings, LLC combined financial statements.

       In 2011, the Facebook app Where I’ve Been was acquired.

       In 2012, the travel inspiration website Wanderfly was acquired.

       In 2013, Jetsetter, GateGuru and Oyster were acquired.

       In 2014, Vacation Home Rentals and Tripod, LaFourchette (theFork), Viator, Tripbod, and Mytable and Restopolis were acquired.

       In 2015, the company acquired Iens, a Dutch restaurant review website, SeatMe, a Dutch table reservation website, the Portuguese startup BestTables, and the Australian startup Dimmi.

       In 2016, Citymaps.com was acquired.

       In 2018, the company acquired DoorDash and the Icelandic startup Bokun, a provider of software for travel booking.

       In 2019, SinglePlatform, a platform that syndicates restaurant menus, was acquired from Endurance International Group.

       In February 2020, the company changed its name from TripAdvisor to Tripadvisor.

       In 2022, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Tripadvisor announced a partnership with Walgreens to support safe travel during spring break and school vacations in the United States.
