        BHP Group, formerly known as BHP Billiton, is an Anglo-Australian multinational producer of commodities. It is the trading entity of two-parent companies (BHP Group Limited and BHP Group Plc.) and operates under a Dual Listed Company structure. Both of the parent companies function as a single operating business but retain separate legal entities and stock exchange listings.

        The global headquarters of the combined group is in Melbourne, Australia, but the headquarters of BHP Group Plc is located in London, England, the United Kingdom.

    HISTORY

        BHP Group was formed in 2001 as BHP Billiton, after a merger between the Australian Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP) and the Anglo-Dutch Billiton Plc.



    Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP)

        The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited was founded in 1885 to operate the silver and lead mine in Broken Hill, Australia.

       In 1984, BHP acquired Utah International from General Electric, allowing BHP to extend its operations into the United States, Brazil, Canada, and Chile.

    Billiton Plc

        Billiton Plc. was founded in 1860 as the mining company NV Billiton Maatschappij.


        In 2015, BHP Billiton created a new independent global metals and mining company, South32, based on a selection of its alumina, aluminum, coal, manganese, nickel, silver, lead, and zinc assets.

        In 2018, BHP Billiton Limited became BHP Group Limited and BHP Billiton Plc. became BHP Group Plc.

        In 2022, BHP’s Petroleum business merged with Woodside to create a global energy company.


    OPERATIONS

        The company operates through the following business segments: Minerals Australia, Minerals Americas, and Petroleum.

    Minerals Australia

        The Minerals Australia segment includes iron ore, nickel, metallurgical coal (steel-making), energy coal and copper operations in Australia.

    Minerals Americas

        The Minerals Americas segment includes copper, iron ore, coal and potash projects, operated and non-operated assets, in Canada, Chile, Peru, the United States, Colombia, and Brazil.

    Petroleum

        The Petroleum segment involves oil and gas operations, including exploration, development and production activities.


        With more than 80 000 employees, BHP Group is considered one of the world’s top producers of commodities. According to Forbes, it is considered one of the Top 2000 Largest Public Companies in the World.
