    HISTORY


       Mediobanca was founded in 1946 at the initiative of Raffaele Mattioli (then Chairman of Banca Commerciale Italiana – BCI) and Enrico Cuccia to support the reconstruction, development and international expansion of Italy’s industry in the wake of World War II. Its three founding banks were Banca Commerciale Italiana, Credito Italiano and Banco di Roma – all subsidiaries of IRI, Italy’s former public holding company.

       In 1956, Mediobanca was listed on the stock market.

       In 1960, Compass was founded, a pioneer in the Italian consumer credit market.

       In 1961, Reconta was formed, the first Italian auditing firm (sold in 1981).

       In 1970, Selma was formed, one of the pioneers of leasing in Italy.

       In 1988, Mediobanca was privatized and the three founding banks (Banca Commerciale Italiana, Credito Italiano, and Banco di Roma) reduced their collective stake to 25%.

       In 1990, Mediobanca became one of the key players in the privatization of Italy’s public companies, including Telecom Italia, Enel, Banca di Roma, and Banca Nazionale del Lavoro (BNL).

       In 2001, the company launched the private bank Banca Esperia through a joint venture with Mediolanum. Since 2013, it also has a presence in Turkey with Mediobanca Advisory.

       In 2008, CheBanca! was formed, the first native online bank operating on a multi-channel distribution model (web, call center and branches) for retail customers. That year, Compass also acquired Linea.

       In 2015, Mediobanca acquired control of Cairn Capital with the aim of building an Asset Management platform.

       In 2016, Mediobanca acquired Barclays’ retail banking business in Italy through the subsidiary CheBanca!. The full control of Banca Esperia has also been acquired that year.

       In 2017, Mediobanca acquired a 69% interest in RAM, one of Europe’s leading systematic investment managers.

       In 2019, Mediobanca Group has acquired a 66% stake in Messier & Associés, one of the largest French Corporate Finance houses.

       In 2021, Cairn Capital Group Ltd, supported by Mediobanca S.p.A. as its majority shareholder, acquired Bybrook Capital LLP, a specialist distressed credit manager.


       With more than 4,500 employees, Mediobanca is one of the largest specialized financial groups in the Italian banking industry. According to Forbes, it is considered one of the Largest Public Companies in the World.
