Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) is an electric power transmission company headquartered in Gurgaon, Haryana, India.
The company’s origins date back to 1981 when the Government of India took a policy decision to form a National Power Grid, which would pave the way for the integrated operation of the central and regional transmission systems.
In October 1989 under the Companies Act, 1956, the National Power Transmission Corporation Limited was formed, and assigned the responsibility of planning, executing, owning, operating and maintaining the high voltage transmission systems in the country.
In October 1992, the National Power Transmission Corporation changed its name to Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID).
POWERGRID operates through the followings business segments: Power System Management, Telecom, International Business, Domestic Consultancy, Smart Grid, Human Resource Development, Technology Development (R&D), and EV Charging Infrastructure.
Power System Management
The Power System Management segment implies operation & maintenance activities of the Transmission System.
Telecom
Power Grid’s telecom company, Powertel, is a National Long-Distance Operator (NLDO) and an Internet Service and Infrastructure provider.
International Business
The International Business segment involves consultancy assignments for clients in Asia, Africa, Asia-Pacific, and Europe.
Domestic Consultancy
In the Domestic Consultancy segment, POWERGRID is considered one of the leading consultants in the field of Power Transmission, Sub-transmission, Distribution, Load Despatch & Communication, and Telecom sectors.
Smart Grid
The Smart Grid segment facilitates an efficient and reliable end-to-end intelligent two-way delivery system from source to sink through the integration of renewable energy sources, smart transmission and distribution. It enables real-time monitoring and control of power system as well as helps in reduction of AT&C losses, demand response and demand side management, power quality management, outage management, smart home energy system, etc.
