       The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) is a diversified conglomerate specializing in the energy industry. It is headquartered in Quarry Bay, Hong Kong, and is considered Hong Kong’s first public utility.

       The company provides town gas and gas appliances to customers from the residential, commercial and industrial sectors. In addition to gas supply, the company diversified its business into telecommunications, building services, engineering and new eco-energies, and others.

       The Towngas Group operates projects that include piped city-gas projects, upstream and midstream projects, water supply and wastewater treatment, natural gas filling stations, as well as new energy exploration and utilisation.


       The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) was founded in 1862 in the United Kingdom.

       In 1864, Towngas commenced supplies of town gas in Hong Kong.

       In 1960, Towngas was listed on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong.

       In 1982, Towngas corporate registration was transferred to Hong Kong.

       In 1992, the Towngas Environmental Working Group was established.

       In 1998, U-Tech Engineering Company Limited was established.

       In 1999, Towngas Launched the Towngas Card, a credit card issued in association with the Bank of East Asia.

       In 2000, GH-Fushion Ltd. was established to manufacture polyethylene fittings for gas and water pipe systems in China. That year, Towngas also formed ECO Energy Company Limited (now renamed ECO Environmental Investments Limited) to design, construct and operate two dedicated liquefied petroleum gas filling stations (ECO stations) at West Kowloon and Chai Wan.

       In 2002, Hong Kong & China Gas Investment Limited was set up in Shenzhen to manage the Group’s investments in the Chinese mainland.

       In 2003, Towngas Nanjing joint venture, the first provincial grade JV, was established. The second provincial grade JV in Wuhan province was established in the same year.

       In 2004, Towngas Telecommunications Fixed Network Limited was established, focusing on telecommunication infrastructure and quality network solutions.

       In 2005, the first water supply joint venture, Wujiang Hong Kong and China Water Company Limited was established.

       In 2006, Towngas acquired Panva Gas Holdings Limited, later renamed Towngas China Company Limited. That year, natural gas was introduced as a partial feedstock in the production of town gas.

       In 2008, ECO Energy Company Limited became ECO Environmental Investments Limited, expanding to the development of new eco-energy businesses.

       In 2010, Meter Technologies Limited was established, specializing in designing and manufacturing smart gas meters and metering systems.

       In 2011, Towngas launched Towngas Telecommunications Company Limited’s Data centre in Jinan.

       In 2012, G-Tech Piping System Company Limited was established, specializing in the supply of polyethylene (PE) pipes and fittings.

       In 2014, Towngas established S-Tech, a new IT services venture focused on the application for cloud computing.

       In 2020, Towngas China signed a capital increase agreement with Shanghai Gas and Shenergy Group to acquire a 25 percent stake in Shanghai Gas.

       In 2021, Towngas China Company Limited was renamed Towngas Smart Energy Company Limited.
