    Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) history, profile and corporate video

       Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) is a global provider of new energy technologies headquartered in Ningde, Fujian Province, China. CATL specializes in the manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles, energy storage systems and battery management systems.

       CATL was founded in 2011, as a spin-off of Amperex Technology Limited (ATL), a previous business founded by Robin Zeng in 1999.

       In 2005, Amperex Technology Limited (ATL) was acquired by Japan’s TDK company.

       In 2012, ATL spun off its EV battery operations into the new company CATL. Also that year, the company started a strategic partnership with BMW.

       In 2013, CATL developed EV batteries for the world’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturer, Yutong.

       In 2015, the company acquired Brunp Recycling to start the development in battery recycling and regenerating.

       In 2017, CATL started a strategic partnership with Valmet Automotive. It also established joint ventures with SAIC Motor.

       In 2018, CATL was listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange. Also that year, it established joint ventures with Dongfeng Motor and GAC Group.

       In 2019, the company established joint ventures with Geely Auto Group and FAW Group.

       In 2021, the company also signed a strategic cooperation agreement with C&D Group.

       Along its history, CATL also started strategic partnerships with other companies including PSA, Hyundai, Honda, Daimler AG, Tesla, Toyota, Volkswagen, and Volvo.


       The Company operates through four business solution segments: Passenger Vehicles, Commercial Application, Energy Storage System and Battery Recycling.

    Passenger Vehicles

       The Passenger Vehicles segment involves solutions for Electric Private vehicles, Electric Operating vehicles and Hybrid vehicles.

    Passenger Vehicles

       The Commercial Application segment includes solutions for Road Passenger Transport (urban public transport, passenger line, tourism passenger transport, commuter, etc.), Urban Delivery (light trucks, minibusses, and minivans), Heavy-duty Vehicles, Urban Street Cleaning (electric washing vehicles, electric washing and sweeping vehicles, electric garbage trucks and other vehicles), Construction machinery, Two-wheeled Vehicles, Vessel, and Special Vehicles.

    Energy Storage System

       The Energy Storage System segment includes solutions for Energy Storage on Power Generation, Energy Storage on Power Transmission and Distribution and Energy Storage on Power Consumption.

    Battery Recycling

    The Battery Recycling segment consists of battery recycling and regenerating. At the same time, CATL has reached a strategic cooperation agreement with BASF to focus on cathode active materials and battery recycling.


    With more than 30,000 employees, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited is considered one of the Top 2000 Largest Public Companies in the World and one of the Top Regarded Companies, according to Forbes.
